Thinking About Buying A Home in Accokeek, Maryland?
Located directly across the Potomac River from Mount Vernon, Accokeek, Maryland, is about 21 miles southwest of Washington, DC. Around 1990, large-scale housing developments came to parts of Accokeek which were close to highway. A supermarket, a public library and improved bus transit followed.
After World War II, a new highway to Washington, DC opened rural Accokeek to settlement by commuters. A limited number of people, many of whom were U.S. Naval scientists and other intellectuals, built contemporary-style homes in an ecologically protected restricted area of west Accokeek called the "Mayaone Reserve." This area retains a rural and scenic character to this day.
