Clinton, Maryland was originally founded by the Surratt family in the 1770s and was known as Surrat's Villa. In the 1800s it became known as Surrattsville. The U.S. Post Office later renamed the town Robeysville when the Surratt name gained notoriety for involvement in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. 1n 1879 the town was renamed once again, settling on the name Clinton.

Clinton contains nearly all single-family housing but includes a few newer townhouses and one retirement mid-rise.
