Thinking About Buying A Home in Solomons Island, Maryland?
Located where the Patuxent River meets Chesapeake Bay in Maryland's Calvert County, Solomons Island is a quiet waterfront fishing village. Here you will find a peaceful setting, great dining at waterfront restaurants, water recreation and a wonderful Riverwalk.
Solomons Island has previously been known as Bourne's Island, Somervell's Island and Sandy Island. According to early land records, the island was sold to Isaac Solomon, a businessman from Baltimore, in 1865. Solomon established a cannery along with housing for the workers and advertised this establishment as "Solomons Island." He leased small lots to many people who paid a yearly rent varying from $9 to $21.
Solomons Island received official recognition when the U.S. Postal Service opened an office in 1870. The town built a reputation as a center for shipbuilding and repairing, seafood harvesting and the provisioning of sailing vessels.
Today, restaurants and gift shops stand where general stores and grocery stores once stood. You will find both quaint Bed & Breakfast inns and modern hotels. But the focus of the community still lies with the waters nearby.
