La Plata is a small, quaint town in Charles County, Maryland, with a population of 6,551 as of the 2000 census. As of the 2000 Census, the population of La Plata was 6,551. The population density was 942.7 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the La Plata was 72.72% White, 23.69% African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.56% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race accounted for 1.30% of the population.
There were 2,223 households in La Plata, out of which 37.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 17.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% were non-families. Just over 23% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.10.
The population of La Plata was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males.
The median income for a household in La Plata was $56,490, and the median income for a family was $66,288. Males had a median income of $42,492 versus $32,125 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,669. Located in Southern Maryland about 30 miles southeast of Washington, DC, the town of La Plata serves as the county seat for Charles County. It is also 60 miles south of Baltimore and 35 miles southwest of Annapolis.
Residents of La Plata enjoy fresh produce, flowers and handcrafted items at the local Farmers' Market. The Market is open on Wednesdays, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. On Wendesdays the Market is located just east of the Baldus Centre building (which is at the corner of Charles Street and Crain Highway). On Saturdays, the Market is located in the back rows of the parking lot behind the Charles County Courthouse. The Farmer's Market usually closes mid-November or the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, depending on the crops, but this year there is a possibility that the Market may be open longer due to interest expressed by some of the vendors and customers. Check for the Farmers Market sign on the corner of Washington Avenue and Charles Street to determine if the Market will remain open later than Thanksgiving.
